Last Thursday, Mines Nancy welcomed its international students for a friendly and festive evening filled with games, cultural exchange, and a taste of local traditions.

The highlight of the event was a live demonstration of how the famous Bergamot candies of Nancy are made, offering students from all over the world a unique glimpse into one of the region’s sweetest specialties.

Bergamot Candy: A Nancy Delicacy with a Story
Students learned about the fascinating history behind this iconic golden candy. The bergamot fruit, originally from the Mediterranean, was long used by pharmacists for its digestive properties. In the 19th century, Nancy’s master confectioners began blending its aromatic essence with sugar, giving birth to the now-celebrated Bergamot of Nancy, today protected by a Geographical Indication. Its delicate, slightly citrusy flavor has made it one of the city’s most recognizable treats.

Celebrating the Coming of the Saint Nicholas Weekend
This evening also marked the start of the Saint Nicholas celebrations, a beloved tradition in Nancy and across Lorraine. Each year, the city lights up for a spectacular parade where Saint Nicholas — the region’s legendary protector of children — travels through the streets accompanied by colorful floats, music, and joyful crowds.
Students enjoyed discovering the story behind this winter celebration, rooted in kindness, generosity, and community spirit, which brings Nancy to life every early December.
